How Hispanics Benefit from Free Trade
As Hispanics, we already know the benefits of free trade. After all, all we have to do is look in our kitchens.
From fruits, herbs and spices, to avocados, or our favorite snacks, many of the things our families enjoy every day come from the countries where we, our parents, or grandparents were born. That’s part of what makes the American Dream and economic freedom so special.
Trade has provided each of us with the increased access to a wide variety of high-quality and lower-cost goods and services from all over the world.
But all of that could be in jeopardy with Washington’s misguided approach of implementing new tariffs on imported goods, which has also resulted in other countries retaliating by imposing their own tariffs on US products. Putting unnecessary barriers on imported items will make life more expensive for Hispanics and all Americans.
Tariffs and other protectionist policies supported by tariffs represent a tax on consumers and business, limiting economic opportunity and stifling growth.
If lawmakers want to make life easier for Hispanic families, they should abandon any plans to implement tariffs, and work to remove barriers, not erect them.
