Voters Support Liberty in Venezuela
(Washington, D.C.) – Venezuela’s opposition party has claimed the majority of seats in the National Assembly in elections held yesterday – the first major shift in power in the legislative branch since the late President Hugo Chavez took office in 1999. Under the leadership of Chavez and his successor Nicolás Maduro, leftist policies have resulted in a struggling economy while riots, crimes, and violent incidents have taken over the cities. The repressive government in Venezuela has suppressed civil rights and jailed opposition leaders. The shift brought on by the voters yesterday is due, many say, to the dismay over economic hardships and mismanagement of the country.

“Today we celebrate a victory for those seeking liberty in Venezuela – one brought about by the people through the ballot box. Their opposition to a collectivist agenda built on a powerful central government should open a path to economic prosperity and basic civil rights. Although the road ahead for Venezuela will be challenging and uncertain, this is a historic and monumental step in the right direction. We hope this new era marks a return to basic property rights, respect for workers, individual rights, and constraints on the power of government – so that the people can create a prosperous and thriving Venezuela.”
