The LIBRE Initiative Calls on Congress to Pass the CONNECT Act to Secure Permanent Telehealth Access for Millions

Bipartisan Legislation Would Ensure Continued Access to Critical Telehealth Services for Over 60 Million Americans

Arlington, VA (4/3/25) – The LIBRE Initiative, the nation’s largest center-right Latino organization, is urging Congress to pass the Creating Opportunities Now for Necessary and Effective Care Technologies (CONNECT) for Health Act, introduced by Senators Brian Schatz (D-HI), Wicker (R-MS), Warner (D-VA), Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Welch (D-VT), and Barrasso (R-WY). If Congress fails to act, over 60 million Americans—many of whom rely on Medicaid and Medicare—could lose access to telehealth, an essential tool for rural and working-class individuals who struggle to attend in-person medical appointments due to financial or logistical barriers.

The urgency to pass this legislation cannot be overstated. Currently, 80 percent of counties across the U.S. are classified as healthcare deserts, lacking the necessary medical services for residents to maintain their health. Without access to telehealth, older Americans, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and rural communities will face additional hardships due to mobility challenges and fewer healthcare options.

“As one of the fastest-growing demographics in the country, Hispanics are among those who stand to lose the most if the CONNECT Act is not passed. Hispanics make up a significant portion of rural America, and one in six Hispanics in the U.S. has a disability. The increase in telehealth use within our community has demonstrated how essential this service is in breaking down barriers to healthcare access.” said Sandra Benitez, Executive Director for The LIBRE Initiative.

“The overwhelming support for telehealth should send a clear message to Congress. In 2023, 87% of patients who used telehealth reported satisfaction with their experience. This is a strong indicator that telehealth is not just a temporary fix—it’s a vital service that Americans trust and need for the long term.” said Helder Toste, Government Affairs for The LIBRE Initiative.

The LIBRE Initiative is calling on Members of Congress to support Senators Schatz (D-HI), Wicker (R-MS), Warner (D-VA), Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Welch (D-VT), and Barrasso (R-WY) in ensuring the passage of the CONNECT Act.
