More Solutions Needed as House Acts on Immigration

(Washington, D.C.) - This week the House of Representatives is expected to consider legislation to finance the Department of Homeland Security beyond February 28, when current funding expires. Members will have the opportunity to vote on a number of immigration-related amendments to the bill, including provisions to block the president's recent executive action, the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and others. This legislation will later be considered by the Senate, which may make changes to the bill or adopt it as is.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

"While the president's actions on immigration raise concerns, it would be a mistake to attempt to legislatively block them without proposing a better solution. Our current system simply isn't working - when it comes to enforcement, employment-driven immigration, visas, or addressing the critical issues of the Dreamers and of those here without legal status. The president's actions are not the fix we need, but simply repealing them is not enough.

Leaders in both parties need to reach across the aisle to work on legislation that addresses all parts of the broken system. Both Republicans and Democrats share responsibility for a failure to accomplish such reform in the past, and both sides must come together on a solution that works for the country."
