Denver, Colorado – Today, the LIBRE Initiative is reaffirming its strong opposition to proposed utility rate increases that would significantly raise costs for Colorado families already facing rising cost-of-living pressures.

The Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) will hold a remote public comment hearing on May 19, 2026, at 4:00 PM MT regarding Xcel Energy’s Electric Rate Increase Proposal (Proceeding No. 25AL-0494E). Xcel Energy has requested a $356 million increase in annual revenue, which would translate to an estimated 9.9% increase in residential electric bills, or roughly $9.94 more per month starting in late August 2026, if approved.

The proposal is currently under review by the Public Utilities Commission of Colorado, whose staff of economists, engineers, and accountants will evaluate the request as part of the formal rate case process.

LIBRE is urging Colorado residents to participate in the hearing and make their voices heard, emphasizing that rising utility costs place additional strain on working families, small business owners, and households already navigating inflation.

LIBRE Colorado, Strategic Director, Angel Merlos issued the following statement:

“Colorado Hispanic families should not have to choose between paying rising utility bills and meeting basic needs. These cost increases place real pressure on households already working hard to get ahead.”
