House Budget Committee Champions Tax Policy That Empowers Latino Economic Mobility: LIBRE

May 16, 2025

Arlington, VA (5/16/25)— The LIBRE Initiative, the largest center-right Latino organization, applauds the House Budget Committee for advancing legislation that would extend key tax relief provisions and strengthen the small business environment. By supporting policies that protect low tax rates and reward work and innovation, the Committee is helping pave the way for a stronger, more inclusive economy.

These efforts are especially meaningful for the Latino community, one of the fastest-growing segments of entrepreneurs and job creators in the country. Latino-owned businesses are launching at a record pace, contributing billions to the U.S. economy and fueling local growth across the nation.

Helder Toste, Federal Affairs Liaison for The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“The people’s House has done the hard work on reigning back spending, unleashing American energy independence, and most of all codifying the tax cuts and jobs act that spurred record growth for Latinos and Americans everywhere. By advancing this legislation, the Committee is helping ensure that small business owners, workers, and families have the tools they need to build, hire, and thrive. We look forward to the members of the House Budget Committee voting in favor of this legislation and giving Americans the best shot at their American Dream.”

Recent Hispanic Polling on Taxes:

  • 93% of Hispanics said they would be concerned if their taxes went up,
    • 65% said they would be very concerned,
  • 74% of Hispanic seniors said they would be very concerned about their taxes going up.
  • 73% of Hispanic voters say the amount of taxes they pay is too high,
    • 39% say taxes are way too high.

Background:

Earlier this year, LIBRE  announced a seven-figure campaign titled: Protecting Prosperity urging lawmakers to extend tax relief for middle-class families. The campaign also includes the launch of www.protectingprosperity.com where activist and volunteers can take action in favor of extending TCJA. This campaign, released in advance of the looming expiration, shows overwhelming consensus among Latino voters that now is not the time to raise taxes.

Polling shows that Latinos across party lines view the expiration of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act — which reduced taxes among other benefits—as a tax hike that would hurt middle-class families, consumers, small businesses, and the economy.

The campaign includes digital ads, grassroots events, and congressional accountability efforts to ensure that the new Congress will extend tax relief for middle-class families – including millions of Latino families who have expressed opposition to tax hikes.
