The LIBRE Initiative Urges Georgia Lawmakers: Educational Opportunities Should Be Universal

HB 60 is a step in the right direction, but it is still limited by income

ATLANTA, GA—HB 60, an education bill that will create Educational Scholarship Accounts in Georgia, is awaiting a vote on the House floor. While the scope of this bill has been expanded—which is a step in the right direction—since first introduced in the 2021 legislative session, it is still limited to students whose families’ income is up to 400% below the federal poverty level and the bill only allocates 95% of the state-wide average per full-time equivalent, per student.

David Casas, director of grassroots operations for The LIBRE Initiative-Georgia, release the following statement:

“We are encouraged to see lawmakers taking steps to expand educational opportunities, but we need to modernize our system so that every student in Georgia has equal opportunities to find the education environment that’s right for them, regardless of their families’ income or where they live.”
