LIBRE Mobilized Latino Community in Colorado to Help Defeat Prop HH
Denver, Colorado — The LIBRE Initiative, an organization committed to empowering the Latino community, issued a statement after Colorado voters rejected Prop HH – a measure that would have prevented Colorado taxpayers from receiving their tax dollars as part of Colorado’s Taxpayer Bill of Rights – also known as TABOR.
Angel Merlos, strategic director for The LIBRE Initiative, issued the following statement:
“Today is a great day for Colorado taxpayers – including Colorado’s growing Latino community – who once again rejected attempts to weaken TABOR.
Despite repeated attempts to deprive Colorado taxpayers from receiving their TABOR refunds, Colorado voters saw right through politicians’ sleight of hand and clever messaging to defeat Prop HH.
For decades, TABOR has helped keep government spending in check, and just as importantly empowered Colorado voters to have a say before they have to pay more in taxes.
If Prop HH had passed, it would have meant a massive transfer of wealth from Colorado’s younger, more diverse, lower-income working families to more established, affluent home- and business owners — with the state government collecting $9 billion in “transaction fees” as part of the deal.”
Background
The LIBRE Initiative made phone calls, sent emails, and organized the Latino community in Colorado to vote No on Prop HH.
