What makes America exceptional?
October 30, 2026
In 1922, British writer G.K. Chesterton described what made America exceptional in a single sentence:
“America is the only nation in the world that is founded on a creed.”
America isn’t held together by a shared ancestry or ethnicity. It’s bound by a shared commitment to the principles enshrined in the Declaration of Independence.
Its ideas helped build one of the most prosperous countries in history — a nation where freedom has fueled innovation, inspired inventions that changed the world, and given generations of people the opportunity to build better lives.
For many Latinos, the story is personal. It’s the story of parents or grandparents who came looking for something they could not find back home — greater freedom, opportunity, and the chance of a better life for their families.
As America celebrates its 250th anniversary and Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, it’s a great opportunity to remember why America is exceptional and why Latinos have always been a key part of that story.
Why is America exceptional
America is the only nation in history to declare that your rights do not come from a king or a government but belong to you simply because you are a human being.
When the Declaration was written, monarchies ruled much of the world, and political power was often determined by birth rather than the consent of the governed.
That promise of freedom and opportunity has drawn many Latinos who fled countries plagued by socialism, like Cuba and Venezuela, to rebuild their lives in America.
They came because here, what you make of your life is largely up to you.
Freedom to build your own life

Freedom isn’t just an idea. It’s the everyday power to decide your own path.
It means you can choose your work, your faith, where you live, how you raise your kids, and what you build.
For many Americans, those freedoms have opened doors that previous generations could only imagine.
One of America’s founding principles is that people should be trusted to run their own lives — and government’s job is to protect that freedom.
That is why a factory worker’s daughter can become a doctor, and why a newcomer with an accent and a dream can build more than people who started with every advantage.
Keeping America unique for generations to come

Latinos have always been part of what makes America exceptional. They’ve fought to keep America free, built countless businesses, strengthened communities, and contributed to American culture.
Today, there are more than 5 million Latino-owned businesses in this country, generating $800 billion a year. And their numbers are growing fast.
America is exceptional because of what it was designed to protect: your freedom to decide your future.
That is worth celebrating and worth defending for the next generation.
