The celebration featured a policy fireside chat with Rep. Pat Harrigan, of North Carolina’s 10th congressional district, moderated by LIBRE’s Sandra Benitez and Helder Toste.

Rep. Pat Harrigan:

“We want to provide more opportunity for the next generation. That is the commitment we have to have in government and that is the outcome we can drive if we commit to the principles this country was founded on.”

The event was part of The LIBRE Initiative’s Capitol Connect, a series of local gatherings between elected officials and the Latino community to discuss policies grounded in freedom and opportunity.

In addition to Rep. Pat Harrigan, State Representative Jonathan Almond was also in attendance to dialogue with attendees about state policy issues to improve the lives of all North Carolinians.

LIBRE’s Executive Director, Sandra Benitez, told the approximately 125 attendees:

“Bad ideas are trying to prevail — groups like the Democratic Socialists of America are trying to win over working-class Latinos who are struggling… But the fact is, you don’t beat socialism with empty rhetoric. You beat it by fixing the conditions that make people think they need it in the first place.”

Cecilia Navas, Grassroots Engagement Director at The LIBRE Initiative issued the following statement:

“Capitol Connect is a special opportunity to bring our Hispanic community together, celebrate our heritage and create meaningful connections with leaders who are shaping the future of North Carolina. As we celebrate 15 years of LIBRE, we are proud to continue empowering Hispanic families to make their voices heard and engage in the issues that matter most to their communities.”
