Expanding U.S. Energy Helps Economy, National Security
U.S. to Become World's Leading Oil Producer

(Washington, D.C.) - As the United States overtakes Saudi Arabia and becomes the world's leading oil producer, American foreign policy should take account of that fact, and policymakers should consider how energy production can further national security goals while boosting the economy. Growing domestic energy production is lessening American dependence on fuel imports, and may allow U.S. allies to reduce their dependence on unfriendly governments as well. Some have suggested that Washington can take advantage of oil and gas production to set allies free. Besides foreign policy and national security ramifications, these changes have also helped boost economic growth - with energy-producing states such as Texas and North Dakota among those that have reduced their unemployment rates dramatically.

Jorge Lima, Policy Director of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

"A growing supply of oil and gas is an important foreign policy tool. Reducing dependence on foreign oil - and potentially helping allies to do the same - gives America more options in responding to threats in a dangerous world.

Energy production is also good for the U.S. economy, with potentially large impacts to jobs and prices here at home. It is critical that America embrace its growing oil position and utilize the opportunity to assist an economy that has struggled for far too long."
