The LIBRE Initiative Testifies in Support of Nevada Licensing Reform

(Carson City) – Yesterday The LIBRE Initiative testified in support of Nevada bill A.B. 275, which would reform the state’s occupational licensing system. The measure would allow those who do not have a Social Security number – but who do have a Taxpayer Identification Number – to apply for occupational licenses in the state. In doing so, it would open the door of many licensed professions to those who currently lack documented status.

Ronnie Najarro, Deputy State Director for The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:

“All too often, unnecessary occupational licensing rules prevent people from using their skills and talents to earn a good living while serving others. Professional licensing rules should be limited to professions where health and safety is a concern – not abused in a way that locks out competition. It’s estimated that Nevada requires licenses for nearly three-quarters of lower-income occupations – with the second most burdensome requirements to get licenses in those occupations. This hurts our economy and denies people the chance to work and contribute fully to the community.

 

“I was honored to testify before the Assembly Committee on Commerce and Labor in support of A.B. 275, which would institute some minor reforms to Nevada’s occupational licensing system. In particular, it would put Nevada’s DACA recipients – nearly 13,000 of them – on equal footing with other state residents by at least allowing them to apply for occupational licenses. This would empower them to earn more and contribute more to their community – while also increasing their contributions in taxes. In short, everyone wins. While more reforms are necessary, this is a good first step.”
