The LIBRE Initiative released a new video featuring our Executive Director Sandra Benitez, offering a powerful, personal look at her journey from a working-class neighborhood in New York to the nation’s largest center-right Latino organization. Her story echoes the many stories from our community — stories from across the country of handwork, resilience, sacrifice, and opportunity.

In the video, Benitez reflects on her upbringing in Inwood, a neighborhood in Upper

Manhattan shaped by economic hardship but grounded in resilience and community. Raised by a family rooted in faith, hard work, and the belief in education, Benitez shares how her grandmother’s sacrifice after fleeing El Salvador and her mother’s perseverance as a young single parent shaped her understanding of opportunity and determination.

Her path into public service began unexpectedly during a senior-year internship in college working on Chris Christie’s gubernatorial campaign in New Jersey. That experience opened her eyes to the lack of engagement with Hispanic communities around policies rooted in freedom and opportunity.

Benitez later joined LIBRE as a grassroots engagement director in Virginia, where she worked directly with Latino families, listening to their challenges and helping connect them with resources and policy solutions. After advancing Latino advocacy through roles at the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Republican National Committee, and a U.S. presidential campaign, Benitez returned to LIBRE to lead the organization into its next chapter.

“When I founded LIBRE in 2011, I knew sustaining our movement would require a new generation of leaders. Sandra embodies that next generation committed to strengthening the Latino community and, in turn, the future of our country.” – Daniel Garza, Founding President

Under Benitez’s leadership, The LIBRE Initiative continues to scale its national impact, engaging millions of voters, hosting thousands of community events, and championing policies that expand economic opportunity, improve education, and protect individual freedom.

Her story is not just a personal journey: It is a testament to the enduring promise of the American Dream and the critical role Latino leaders play in shaping the nation’s future.
