Latinos Urge State Lawmakers to Lower Costs and Expand Opportunity During 2026 Session

As the State Legislature convenes for its 30-day session, The LIBRE Initiative, the largest center right Latino organization, is calling on lawmakers to exercise fiscal restraint and reject policies that would increase government spending or raise taxes on hardworking families.

With many Hispanic households continuing to struggle with rising costs, LIBRE is urging legislators to prioritize solutions that improve affordability and expand opportunity across the state. Rather than adding new financial burdens, lawmakers should focus on removing government barriers that make everyday life more expensive.

LIBRE will closely monitor legislation impacting the cost of living, including efforts to protect affordable and reliable energy, expand education freedom, and advance medical liability reforms that help lower healthcare costs and increase access to care.

Christine Martinez, Strategic Director of LIBRE New Mexico, issued the following statement:

“New Mexico families are feeling the pressure of higher prices at the grocery store, at the gas pump, and in their healthcare costs. The solution isn’t more government spending or higher taxes it’s smart policies that remove barriers and empower families to get ahead. During this legislative session, lawmakers should focus on protecting affordable energy, expanding education options, and standing strong against out-of-control spending that hurts working families across our state.”
