Arlington, VA (9/17/25) — The LIBRE Initiative, the nation’s largest center-right Latino advocacy organization, today called on Congress to prevent harmful government shutdowns by advancing commonsense reforms.
Shutdowns create unnecessary uncertainty and harm American families, small businesses, and the economy. They also disrupt essential federal services, delay budget processes, and drive wasteful omnibus spending packages that sideline meaningful debate and reform.
Sandra Benitez, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative, issued the following statement:
“Government shutdowns don’t solve problems — they make them worse. Latinos and all Americans pay the price when shutdown brinkmanship leads to bloated spending, uncertainty, and erodes trust in Congress. Instead of lurching from one crisis to the next, lawmakers should adopt practical solutions like the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act that extend funding, keep Congress in session, and ensure a more transparent, bottom-up appropriations process.
By putting an end to shutdown threats, Congress can focus on the real work of reducing waste, growing our economy, prioritizing fiscal responsibility, and advancing policies that strengthen our economy towards greater opportunity and prosperity for every community — including the Hispanic community that continues to power America’s growth.”
The Prevent Government Shutdowns Act, sponsored by Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) and Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-TX), would automatically extend government funding at current levels until Congress completes its appropriations work, avoiding unnecessary disruptions and providing stability for families, businesses, and the economy.
