Sen. Cornyn and LIBRE meet Texas small business owners to keep tax cuts

Why Latino business owners back 2017 tax cuts

May 5, 2025

When a senator walks into a brewery … it’s usually about more than getting a couple of drinks.

And that’s what happened a few days ago when U.S. Sen. John Cornyn and The LIBRE Initiative met with over 100 small business owners at 5×5 Brewing Co. to talk about the looming expiration of the 2017 Trump tax cuts.

The location wasn’t random. 5×5 Brewing is a business that’s grown thanks to the breathing room those tax cuts gave it. And like thousands of other small businesses across Texas and the country, its future is now at risk.

Sen. Cornyn clearly laid out the stakes: “These issues have a big impact on the quality of life of not just the Rio Grande Valley, but the entire country.”

Across industries, the message from business owners is clear: Congress must extend the 2017 tax cuts.

WHAT’S AT STAKE

If lawmakers don’t step up, the expiration of those cuts could wreak havoc on thousands of small businesses. In Texas alone, 75,000 jobs are at risk. Nationally, families could see their tax bills go up by $1,500 on average.

This would be especially devastating for the Latino community, which owns and operates 1 in 4 new small businesses in America.

As you know, opening and keeping a small business afloat is no easy task. The last thing they need is a higher tax bill when that money could go toward hiring, expanding, and reinvesting in their communities.

If Congress sleepwalks into a tax hike, thousands of small businesses would be forced to hike prices, lay off workers, or shut down.

HOW THE TAX CUTS HELPED

There’s also another reason why small business owners are speaking up in favor of the 2017 cuts. They’ve seen firsthand how they delivered prosperity for all Americans.

Here are just two things that happened in the first years after the Trump tax cuts were passed:

  • Latino unemployment dropped to a record low of 3.9% by August 2019.
  • Median household income rose to an all-time high just two years after the cuts went into effect.

These aren’t just numbers in a spreadsheet — they represent jobs, opportunities, and prosperity for all Americans.

LIBRE’S GOAL: EXTEND THE TRUMP TAX CUTS

That’s why LIBRE is working alongside lawmakers like Sen. Cornyn to make sure Congress extends the tax cuts before it’s too late.

Across 13 states, we’re mobilizing our grassroots network, knocking on doors, and hosting events to rally Latino communities and protect small businesses from the largest tax hike in recent history.

The stakes are high — and your representatives need to hear from you
