The OBBB is a win for all Americans, not just the wealthy

August 28, 2025

Critics of the One Big Beautiful Bill are very loud … and very wrong. One of their favorite claims?

“This bill steals from the poor to give tax cuts to the very rich.”

Of all the myths they’ve used against the bill, this is one of the worst.

The truth is, the One Big Beautiful Bill prevents a massive tax hike on everyday Americans.

It’s tax relief for the middle and working classes. It’s tax relief for Latinos.

In fact, if it weren’t for the OBBB, around 3 in 4 Latinos would have seen their taxes rise.

We’ve already debunked many of the lies about the OBBB, including those about Medicaid. Now, let’s take a stab at this one.

Here’s what the OBBB really does.

The bill does a lot. It reforms Medicaid, stops unnecessary energy giveaways, and gives Border Patrol what it needs to secure the border.

However, the big-ticket item that will have the most impact on your life is making the 2017 Trump tax cuts permanent.

Back in the first Trump presidency, Congress reduced the tax rate across income levels, returning billions of dollars to the American people. That meant families had more money to save, spend, and invest.

Latinos, especially, benefited from the cuts.

A couple of years after the tax cuts passed, Latino unemployment rates reached a record low of 3.9%, and median household income rose to an all-time high.

[Here’s what’s in the OBBB]

What if the OBBB didn’t happen?

What if the OBBB had not passed? Here’s the breakdown.

The 2017 Trump tax cuts were set to expire at the end of this year; taxes would have soared back to pre-2017 levels, hitting the middle class hard.

After four years of the bad economic policies of the Biden administration, the last thing Americans needed was to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to the federal government.

Here’s how much an entry-level electrician, a single mother of one, and a married couple with two kids would have had to pay if the OBBB had not passed:

Without the bill, cases like these would have been commonplace.

Tax rates in 5 of the 7 tax brackets would have gone up, the standard deduction would be cut in half, and people earning over $12,000 — or couples over $24,400 — would have paid more. This would have meant a tax hike for over 75% of Latino households.

The OBBB saved millions of Americans from a tax hike; that’s hardly a handout for the very rich.

It helps all Americans.

The 2017 cuts reduced taxes across the board and increased taxes for none.

Turning the clock back to the 2016 tax rates would have left millions of middle-class Latino families with a massive tax bill to pay.

Congress had two options: make most Americans richer by making the Trump tax cuts permanent, or make most of us poorer by taking more of our tax money.

Thankfully, they made the right choice.
