The OBBB fixes Medicaid, here’s how
August 19, 2025
Despite what you might have heard, The One Big Beautiful Bill won’t leave your abuela without health care.
But that’s what millions of Americans are hearing every day, and with millions of Latinos relying on Medicaid, it’s natural to worry. You deserve to know the facts.
And here’s the truth: This bill won’t destroy Medicaid; it will save it.
It restores Medicaid to its core mission: protecting the vulnerable.
And with nearly one-third of Medicaid recipients being Latino, that means protecting our families, our future, and the safety net our communities rely on.
Let’s cut through the noise and examine what the bill really does and why it matters to you.
Medicaid was failing at its mission.
Medicaid was created in 1965 with one noble goal: to be a safety net for Americans who truly need help — pregnant women, struggling families, and people with disabilities.
For decades, that’s how the program worked.
However, in 2010, things changed. The Affordable Care Act and later expansions under the Biden administration stretched Medicaid far beyond its original mission.
The result?
- Enrollment jumped by 30 million.
- Spending nearly doubled.
- People who truly needed care were left waiting in long lines, sometimes getting substandard treatment.
[This bill would also improve health care for millions of Latinos]
This was neither fair nor sustainable.
Medicaid was projected to spend over $1.1 trillion a year by 2034, way more than before Biden’s irresponsible extensions.
This graphic from the Paragon Health Institute shows how Medicaid spending went way beyond what it was supposed to.
What’s more, Medicaid is a perfect target for scammers and fraudsters who are cheating the system and getting care that should go to vulnerable adults.
In 2024, $14.5 billion was stolen from Medicaid — enough to provide lifesaving care to millions of Americans in real need.
If Medicaid continued down this irresponsible path, it would eventually run out of money and put everyone’s health care at risk. The easy thing to do would have been to ignore this and keep the status quo.
The One Big Beautiful Bill, however, helps steer Medicaid away from overspending.

What the One Big Beautiful Bill actually does
Medicaid won’t be getting any cuts. In fact, Medicaid spending will still grow, just at a responsible, sustainable pace.
The One Big Beautiful Bill does that by passing some commonsense, rational policies to make sure the American taxpayer is getting the best bang for their buck. Here’s what’s in it:
- Ends pandemic “automatic renewals” so we can double-check that people are still eligible.
- Restores income and residency checks — commonsense stuff, just like when you apply for any other program.
- Stops paying states to sign up more people, no matter their eligibility — if you don’t qualify for Medicaid, you shouldn’t get Medicaid.
- Gives states better tools to fight waste and fraud so benefits go to real needs, not scammers or mistakes.
- Adds work requirements for able-bodied adults. If you can work but choose not to, your neighbor shouldn’t be forced to pay for your health care.
Why this is important
Latinos are nearly a third of Medicaid recipients. We’re talking about millions of our families — abuelitas who need their prescriptions, pregnant moms getting prenatal care, and kids going for their checkups.
It’s our duty to keep Medicaid from failing.
At The LIBRE Initiative, we believe Medicaid should be a safety net, not a free-for-all.
This is our tax money, our families, and our future. Let’s keep Medicaid strong for the people who truly need it, in our community and across America.
