Education Savings Accounts: The policy Latinos are rallying behind
December 17, 2024
As the last election proved, Latinos vote for policies that work.
And there’s one policy getting overwhelming support across the community: Education Savings Accounts (ESA).
ESAs give families the freedom to use their dollars on the education that best suits their children unique needs and talents.
This issue might fly under the radar, but it’s not surprising to anyone paying attention.
One-size-fits-all education is on its way out.
Latinos are tired of a one-size-fits-all system that limits their children’s educational opportunities to arbitrary ZIP codes in schools that may not be the best fit for their children.
According to a recent report from The LIBRE Institute , Latinos have higher dropout rates and are less likely to have a High School diploma than other demographics. Although the gap has closed over the last few years, far too many children are still trapped in schools that can’t offer them the education they need to thrive.
That’s why Latinos are rallying around ESAs.
According to a 2024 LIBRE Institute poll, almost 3 out of every 4 Latinos support school choice, and nearly 8 out of every 10 Hispanics support ESAs, which give families greater freedom in deciding which school they should send their children to.
Latinos also enroll at charter schools at higher rates than any other demographic in the country.
Today, more than 1 in 3 charter school students is Hispanic, as Latino enrollment in charters has increased by over 15% in the last 20 years.
There’s clear grassroots Latino support for educational reform, and at The LIBRE Initiative, we are working hard to turn that enthusiasm into meaningful policy change.
LIBRE marshals our grassroots army for educational freedom
Since we first started, The LIBRE Initiative has been mobilizing our vast grassroots army and state-of-the-art data capabilities to effectively push for policies that allow families to choose the best education for their children
- In Georgia, The LIBRE Initiative and Americans for Prosperity (AFP) played a key role in getting the state legislature to pass the Georgia Promise Scholarship Act, giving Georgia families up to $6,500 to pay for the best educational opportunities for their children.
- In North Carolina, The LIBRE Initiative worked tirelessly to get the North Carolina General Assembly to pass and then overturn Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of HB 10, a bill that will make funding available for all students enrolled in the state’s school choice program.
- In Texas, LIBRE and AFP are working hand in hand to expand ESA programs to thousands of Texas families and allow parents to give their children the education that best suits their unique needs and abilities. You can join the fight to get Texas families more educational freedom here.
America wins with a well-prepared workforce that will be critical to build American prosperity for decades to come.
Latinos know this.
And at LIBRE we are working to empower them to get the education they need and deserve.
