For much of human history, and in many parts of the world today, people haven’t been free to speak openly. They have faced censorship, intimidation, or even imprisonment simply for criticizing those in power.

In fact, censorship and intimidation were among the reasons many Latinos fled their homes and came to America.

America is different.

Our founders knew well that we could keep a republic only if citizens could speak openly, share ideas, and question authority without fear. They understood that if an ordinary citizen couldn’t say what they thought, they wouldn’t live in a free republic.

It’s no surprise that freedom of speech is protected in the First Amendment.

Free speech has allowed Americans to exchange ideas, challenge one another, and work together to build a stronger nation.

Self-government strengthens communities

Self-government is more than a system of elections. It’s the belief that free people have both the ability and the responsibility to shape their own communities.

In America, we don’t have to wait for someone else to solve every problem.

When we see a problem that’s affecting our community, we roll up our sleeves. We volunteer, organize, sign petitions, and solve problems.
