A choice for America: Liberty or control

November 26, 2025

The election of socialist Zohran Mamdani as the next mayor of New York makes something clear: America is facing a stark choice.

We could choose to either believe in American freedom … or trust the government.

Mamdani believes there’s no problem the government can’t solve. He sincerely believes that the government can make life more affordable, rent cheaper, and Americans more prosperous.

Many Latinos know very well how this story ends.

In places like Cuba or Venezuela, socialism (akin to what Mamdani believes in) turned once-proud and prosperous nations into collapsed economies that people flee from.

Odds are, you have a close friend or family member who has experienced the failures of socialism firsthand.

Thankfully, there’s another vision for America’s future. One that has a proven track record of success: liberty and the American people.

Emily Seidel, the president and CEO of Americans for Prosperity, our sister organization, penned an op-ed outlining the real solution to America’s challenges.

“For free people, there is truly no problem too big or care too small. Free people don’t wait on a government middleman to solve their problems or redefine what’s possible,” Emily wrote.

Socialism and big government: Failed solutions

Throughout history, many politicians have sold the government as the only thing that can solve our problems and improve our lives.

They come to power saying that only the government can stop inflation, raise wages, and create a fairer and more equal society.

They did this in Cuba and Venezuela, and the results were massive shortages, deep inequality, and a total loss of freedom.

Of course, New York isn’t Cuba and Maduro isn’t Mamdani, but their policies share the same core idea: They don’t trust the people.

They think government bureaucrats know better than you, and the people should give up their freedoms for their own good.

History shows this line of thinking always ends in disaster.

As Emily writes in her op-ed:

“When government power grows too large and unchecked, good intentions give way to inefficiency, corruption, and even oppression.”

We can’t let this happen.

Freedom: A track record of success

Fortunately, we already know what works.

Free markets, individual liberty, and limited government have powered America’s success from the very beginning. Since 1776, this country has trusted its people — not the government — to build a better tomorrow.

And it paid off.

Free markets fueled innovation, created jobs, and built the strongest economy on Earth.

Individual liberty gave every person the chance to shape their own future and pursue their American Dream.

Limited government protected people’s rights and kept power from drifting into the hands of a few.

For more than 250 years, these principles have lifted millions out of poverty and opened doors for families from every background, including millions of Latinos who came here seeking the freedom their home countries could no longer offer.

LIBRE believes in you — and in America

Latinos believe in these principles as well, as the latest LIBRE Institute poll shows.

That’s why Latinos are opening small businesses at a higher rate than anyone else. That’s why Latinos are supporting pro-liberty policies and champions. And that’s why The LIBRE Initiative was founded almost 15 years ago.

Unlike Mamdani and other socialists, we believe in you, in freedom, and in the American people.

We’re committed to keeping the American spirit and dream alive.

That’s why we’re launching the “Quiero ser LIBRE” campaign to defend our freedoms and make sure opportunity thrives for everyone.

Let’s keep fighting for what matters most.
