Hispanic Advocacy Group Strongly Supports Colorado’s Taxpayer Bill of Rights

(Denver, CO) –Today, The LIBRE Initiative, an organization committed to empowering the Hispanic community, responded to reports that Gov. Jared Polis would support legislation that would expedite Colorado taxpayers from receiving their tax refunds up to eight months earlier.

According to reports, individual taxpayers would receive $400 under the plan while families would get $800. The money would be sent out as soon as August —instead of the normal timeline of spring 2023.

Angel Merlos, strategic director for The LIBRE Initiative, issued the following statement:

“While we enthusiastically support Coloradans receiving their TABOR refunds as quickly as possible, it is incredibly disingenuous for some lawmakers in our state to tout the benefits of tax relief while at the same time circumventing Colorado’s Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) at every turn. Since being enacted, TABOR has helped create the economic conditions to help our local economy thrive while also instilling a sense of accountability between our elected officials and Colorado taxpayers.”

Merlos went on to add:

“The best way to ensure that Colorado taxpayers are better able to keep more of our hard-earned money is to protect, preserve and defend TABOR. We look forward to working with the lawmakers touting the benefits of tax relief next time that TABOR comes under attack.”
