Strong Economic Growth Raising Wages, Creating Opportunity

Washington Needs to Learn from State Successes

(Washington, D.C.) – While many in Washington are focused on imposing new taxes, regulations and mandates in an effort to forcibly transfer wealth between Americans, parts of the country are promoting economic opportunity with a growing economy. In parts of North Dakota for example – where government regulations permit robust energy development – the unemployment rate is below 1 percent and many workers enjoy starting salaries far above the minimum wage. In Texas, employers are hiring thousands of new workers – bringing the local unemployment rate down below 6 percent, with wages trending upwards. Reports indicate there are fewer bankruptcies and increased housing starts. Through strong growth, working families are better off – without new taxes, without controversial new mandates, and without wasteful political infighting.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

"President John F. Kennedy famously said that a rising tide lifts all boats. There are parts of America where that's still true – where governments are focused on tax and regulatory policy that let entrepreneurs create businesses and grow so that wealth and opportunity permeate through all income levels. When this happens, wages rise, family budgets improve, and an expanding tax base allows officials to address community needs. It can happen without political infighting, and without costly regulations that divide Americans into winners and losers.

America remains the smartest, most entrepreneurial, and hardest-working country on Earth. Economic growth can improve lives – if Washington cuts spending, reduces regulation, and gets out of the way. It's time to make this a national priority. Washington should look at policies that are working in states and regions, and figure out whether they can be adopted nationally. All American workers deserve these opportunities. "
