Senate Should Vote on House-passed Right to Try Bill

(Washington, D.C.) – This week the House passed legislation to ensure that terminally ill patients have the right to use drug treatments that remain in clinical trials, but have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Sponsored by Representative Fitzpatrick, the bill passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 267-149. The bill is similar to legislation that passed the Senate last year.

Kevin Hernandez, Policy Director of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“Patients can only benefit from having more treatment options, and patients facing the most serious health challenges should not be prevented from choosing experimental treatments that may help them. If patients – in consultation with their families and doctors – believe that an unproven medication or therapy is the best option available, then government should not stand in the way

Now that the House of Representatives has passed legislation to help guarantee that patients have the right to try, the Senate needs to act as well. We are hopeful that the Majority Leader will schedule time for a Senate vote as promptly as possible.”
