Sen. Rubio Legislation Corrects Immense Injustice Within Cares Act Law

Bill Ensures All Eligible US Adult Citizens Receive the Coronavirus Relief

Arlington, VA – Today, The LIBRE Initiative, an organization committed to empowering the Hispanic community, announced its support for the American Citizen Coronavirus Relief Act, legislation that would amend the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to ensure that US adult citizens, who were otherwise eligible for Economic Impact Payments (EIP) under the CARES act, may no longer be excluded solely based on their spouse’s immigration status. There is a need for this legislation because American citizens have been denied relief they otherwise would’ve been entitled to, if not for their spouse’s immigration status.

Daniel Garza, president of The LIBRE Initiative, issued the following statement:

“To strip an American citizen of their benefits under the CARES Act law, based solely on who they marry, does not uphold our sense of equality and undermines personal agency. We urge lawmakers, from both sides of the aisle, to immediately right this wrong. We commend Senator Rubio for introducing this important piece of legislation which aims to ensure that American citizens receive the benefits they are elliglet for under this law.”
