LIBRE/AFP: Rubio Legislation Corrects an Immense Injustice Within Cares Act Law

Bill Ensures Eligible US Adult Citizens Receive the Coronavirus Relief

Miami, FL – Today, The LIBRE Initiative – Florida, an organization committed to empowering the Hispanic community, announced its support for the American Citizen Coronavirus Relief Act, legislation that would amend the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to ensure that US adult citizens, who were otherwise eligible for Economic Impact Payments (EIP) under the CARES act, may no longer be excluded solely based on their spouse’s immigration status. There is a need for this legislation because American citizens have been denied relief they otherwise would’ve been entitled to, if not for their spouse’s immigration status.

Skylar Zander, FL State Director for Americans for Prosperity, and Cesar Grajales, FL Coalitions Director for The LIBRE initiative issued the following statement:

“It is contrary to our nation’s values and principles that a US Citizens would be denied a benefit under the CARES Act law simply because their spouse is not a US resident or citizen. We applaud Senator Rubio for introducing this important legislation which would correct an immense injustice within the Cares Act law and ensure that all eligible US adult citizens receive the relief they are eligible for under the law.
