Hispanic Enrollment for ACA Falls Short
Accountability Campaign Encourages Latinos to Consider Options
 

(Washington, D.C.) – From a delayed launch of a Spanish-language website, to higher deductibles and premiums, and a limited choice of providers, Hispanics are learning about the serious problems with the Affordable Care Act ACA), also known as Obamacare – and they are responding as such. With just a few weeks to go before the end of the year, these problems are causing enrollment in the nation's Latino community to fall far short of expectations. In California for example – where more than half of the 7 million uninsured are Hispanic – just five percent of enrollees so far are primarily Spanish-speaking. The state's consumers in general are rejecting the program as well, as just 107,000 people have purchased insurance under the law – even though an estimated 1.4 million qualify for subsidies.
 
"The Accountability Project" campaign sponsored by LIBRE, has noted the flaws of the health care reform law, but also the elected officials that support this bad law, and encourages Latinos to hold them accountable. The bilingual multimedia campaign has been seen by millions of Americans, with hundreds of thousands visiting the keepthemaccountable.net website in English or proyectorendircuentas.com in Spanish.
 
Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:
 
"Latinos are like many other Americans who refuse to sign up for a health care law that appears to be a bad deal. And the elected officials in Washington and the states haven't helped. This program was never well explained, and those whose primary language is Spanish have suffered a disadvantage in obtaining information and the convenience of online enrollment.

It's time for those who voted for this law – and those who still support it – to explain to their constituents why they insist on going forward with it despite its obvious problems. Real health care reform should build on the strengths of the current system and protect the doctor-patient relationship."
