Nearly Half of Uninsured Americans Oppose Health Care Law

System for Resolving Disputes Over Costs and Coverage Not Working

(Washington, D.C.) – According to a recent survey by Kaiser Health News, 47 percent of uninsured Americans have “unfavorable views” of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. This is nearly double the percentage who said they like the law. This is a significant deterioration from December 2013, when 43 percent disapproved of the law, and 36 percent liked it. These findings are generally consistent with other polls, which have shown that uninsured Americans – who are supposed to be helped by the law – view it negatively, rather than positively.

The law is likely to grow more unpopular due to continuing problems that have not been disclosed. According to a recent report, the Administration has not revealed that the appeal system for handling disputes arising from Healthcare.gov is not working. People who believe the website gave them the wrong payment amount, or who have been improperly denied insurance, are permitted to appeal the decision. But 22,000 complaints “are sitting, untouched, inside a government computer.” An unknown number of people who have called to file an appeal have been turned away, because government employees cannot correct their record.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:

"Evidence continues to mount that this complex, behemoth government mandate is not the solution it was promised to be. Still, proponents continue to assert that once the website glitches are fixed, and once people understand the law better, individuals will change their minds. All the while, more and more Americans are growing dissatisfied with the law’s disastrous results and the numbers of those voicing their opposition to this deeply-flawed system continues to grow as well. Even the people who were supposed to receive the greatest benefit, the young and the uninsured, are understandably rejecting a plan that limits choice, raises prices, cancels coverage, and reduces quality of care. It is time for accountability.”
