Leaders Should Work Together to Ensure Dream and Promise Act Leads to Actual Protection for Dreamers

(Arlington, VA) – Leaders in the House of Representatives have introduced H.R. 6, the “Dream and Promise Act.” This legislation would offer conditional permanent resident status and a potential path to citizenship for the Dreamers – immigrants brought here as children without legal status. The legislation would reportedly also offer legal status to recipients of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), along with cancellation of their removal proceedings. The House is expected to consider this legislation in the days ahead.

Daniel Garza, President of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“The Dreamers are our neighbors – students, workers, and men and women in our armed services. They want nothing more than the certainty they need to plan for the future, and to contribute more fully to our nation – the only country they call home. While we welcome this action by House leaders, we need more than just a vote. It is past time for a real solution. We encourage House leaders to truly reach across the aisle, open the process to feedback and amendments in a manner that will encourage both Democrats and Republicans to engage – so that the House can deliver on Dreamer protection legislation that has the broad bipartisan support needed to be signed into law. We stand ready to work with any leader to achieve that critical goal.”
