Latino Unemployment Will Remain High in 2013

Last Quarter reported the Weakest Economic Growth Rate in Nearly Two Years (Washington DC) – As the countdown to the sequester begins, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 0.1 percent economic growth last quarter, the weakest in nearly two years. According to projections by the Economic Policy Institute, Hispanics in the northeast are most affected by the weak economy, and the unemployment rate amongst Hispanics is likely to remain at 9.8 through 2013. Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement: "As the Administration stubbornly persists in continuing its disastrous debt inducing policies, convinced this approach will someday generate a promised economic recovery, hard-working Americans have grown weary that the reckless spending has fallen squarely on their backs. The unfortunate consequences are especially affecting the Hispanic community who suffer disproportionate jobless rates as a result of elected officials having strayed from the principles of economic freedom. Fiscal responsibility and market-based policies are proven to create jobs, protect liberty and increase prosperity, but have been ignored by elected officials. Washington’s failure to reduce wasteful spending, address entitlement reform, and reduce excessive taxes and regulations will ensure continued anemic economic growth and insufficient job opportunities for all Americans.” The states with the highest fourth-quarter Hispanic unemployment rates: Rhode Island, 18.2% vs. 10.3% overall; Connecticut, 16.1% vs. 8.8%; and Pennsylvania, 13.3% vs. 7.9%.
