Florida Senate Can Improve Education Access for all Florida Students by Approving School Choice Today

(Washington D.C.) The Florida Senate is expected to close its regular session today in response to a similar act by the Florida House yesterday. The early end to regular session has left important school choice legislation, specifically, SB 1552 and HB 1145, on the line.  While the House did pass the measure, it is currently awaiting floor consideration in the Senate. If the Senate does not take up and approve the bills without amendment, the current effort to expand school options for families and students will be killed, forcing families to wait for a future legislative opportunity.

Jorge A. Lima, Policy Director of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“The members of the Florida State Senate must act to approve SB1552 and HB1145 before they adjourn, or face thousands of disappointed Florida families. If the Senate amends the legislation or refuses to approve it, this critical effort is over for the foreseeable future. This is a strong piece of legislation – one that contains key reforms that families and students support. Over the last few weeks, thousands of individuals have signed our petition urging officials in Florida to take action that would provide parents with greater choice on where their children go to school, both in the private and public school system – which would be provided with the approval of this bill. Florida parents should contact their State Senators today and urge Members of the Senate to take up and approve the measure. This is a no brainer.”
