Troubled Health Care Website Relaying Faulty Data

Troubled Health Care Website Relaying Faulty Data
Customers May Not Know They Are Not Enrolled

(Washington, D.C.) –  As the White House launches a promotional campaign to boost support for the President's health care law, supporters claim that the Healthcare.gov website is now working according to expectations. However, continuing defects in the website may leave many consumers with the false impression that they have purchased insurance, when no purchase has been properly recorded. This is due to the website's inability to guarantee that it is properly relaying the necessary consumer data to insurers to complete the enrollment. While the site may be processing and collecting data from many individuals, it is not clear how many will experience a failure of the system without receiving any notification. Reporters who ask for more information are not getting it.

According to recent reports, many insurers say that they are being "deluged" with calls from consumers who believe they successfully completed a transaction, but for whom the company has no record. Others have received incomplete data, requiring them to contact the buyer for more information. In still other cases, insurers do not know whether a buyer qualifies for a subsidy, and can not properly determine how much to charge or when the government will pay the subsidized portion. Thousands of consumers in one state are already dealing with a problem of this type – but it may ultimately affect many more nationwide. Ultimately, these problems could prevent people from obtaining new policies before December 23, which is the last day to enroll in time for a policy to begin on January 1.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:

"Despite assurances from the Administration, people who need health insurance cannot count on the health care website. Roughly 5 million have received cancelation notices on their current health insurance policies. It is expected that tens of millions of Americans will ultimately see their policies canceled. Instead of a functioning health care system, they are left with broken promises.

The builders of Healthcare.gov say the site can now handle thousands of users at a time. Nevertheless, it is still crashing. Those who are able to sign-on continue to find high premiums, high deductibles, and narrow provider networks. This situation is only going to get worse if the President does not recognize the faults of this law and take immediate, substantial steps to fix them."
