Tillis, Lankford, Hatch, Introduce Legislation to Provide Relief to Dreamers

(Washington, D.C.) – Today Senators Tillis, Lankford, and Hatch announced the introduction of legislation to provide relief to Dreamers – people brought to the United States as children through no fault of their own. Under the “Succeed Act,” certain immigrants present in the U.S. since the start of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program would be eligible for conditional permanent resident status. They would be required to obtain a high school diploma, pass a criminal background check, submit biometric identifying data, and pay off any taxes owed. After 10 years, they would be permitted to apply for a green card, during which time they must either earn a college degree, serve in the military, or be consistently employed.

Daniel Garza, President of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“Our immigration system has serious flaws that must be addressed by Congress. They require policy responses that are employment-based and market-driven, and which address all aspects of the issue – including the Dreamers, the many undocumented, law abiding immigrants who live in our communities, and enhanced border enforcement. By working together on appropriate reforms, lawmakers have the opportunity to help grow economic opportunity across the nation.

A number of conservative lawmakers in the House and Senate have introduced legislative proposals to address this challenge. We are grateful for their leadership on this important issue. We believe that this proposal should be considered among those worthwhile reforms that have been set forward, and that Congress should seize the opportunity to debate and adopt a solution to the unilateral executive action imposed by President Obama, without regard to Congress.”
