The LIBRE Initiative-North Carolina Urges Lawmakers To Pass Student Success Program

HB 934 empowers families to address impact of the disruption in learning caused by the pandemic

(RALEIGH, NC) –  Today, The LIBRE Initiative, an organization committed to empowering the Latino community, issued support for HB 934, a bill under consideration in North Carolina’s legislature, otherwise known as the Student Success Program.

This program allows families to access funds that can be applied toward allowable educational activities that best meet each child’s unique learning needs.

Richard Bethencourt, The LIBRE Initiative’s Grassroots Engagement Director in North Carolina, issued the following statement:

“Over the past year too many students have been lacking the tools to discover, develop and apply their unique talents because of one-size-fits-all solutions to continuing their education. The many disruptions to their education have impacted families, students and teachers alike. These unprecedented changes to our education system and our lives brought about by the pandemic have undoubtedly impacted students’ learning. While every family confronted these changes differently, they confronted them together.”

He went on to add:

“It is clear that families are best positioned to assess the impact of the past year and the disruption in learning caused by the pandemic. North Carolina’s lawmakers should pass the Student Success Program to empower families to identify programs, interventions and services that best meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of individual children.”
