Senators, Representatives Oppose Drastic Cuts in Refugee Admissions

(Arlington, VA) – In the wake of an announcement by the administration that refugee admissions would be reduced to a record low of just 18,000 annually, 17 Members of the House of Representatives have written to Secretary of State Pompeo in support of expanding those admissions. This letter follows others that have been sent recently by Senators and Representatives in both parties, including a bipartisan letter signed by 18 United States Senators earlier this year.

Daniel Garza, President of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“We’re glad that so many in the House and Senate – on both sides of the aisle – recognize the importance of our longstanding national commitment to offer refuge to those in need. While the United States can only re-settle a small fraction of the millions of refugees around the world, doing so saves lives and brings to our country talented people who contribute to our nation. Further restricting legal channels of immigration by cutting refugee admissions to their lowest level in history is not warranted, and we applaud the many Members of Congress who recognize that.”
