Senate Debate on Dreamers Should Promote Certainty, Security

(Washington, D.C.) – The Senate has voted to begin a debate on immigration legislation.

Daniel Garza, President of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“The Dreamers were brought here through no fault of their own. They are students, workers, and men and women serving in our armed forces, and they know no other home than America. Without the certainty that comes with durable reform enacted into law, they cannot plan their lives and make a full contribution to their communities and nation. The president has put forward a framework that will allow the opportunity for citizenship for 1.8 million, while making our nation more secure. The time is right for Congress to act.

The Senate has begun an open debate on immigration, raising the possibility of passing a bill that provides the certainty of permanent relief to the Dreamers, while enhancing security at the border. We encourage all Senators – and all Members of Congress –to work in good faith to reach a bipartisan solution that improves our immigration policy and protects the Dreamers – without arbitrary cuts to legal immigration. There is substantial bipartisan support for these goals. We are hopeful that this week’s debate will yield a bill that has broad support, and which will set the stage for action by the House.”
