Ready to work with Congress on Dreamer Bills, Set Immigration Priorities

(Arlington, VA) – Later this week, the U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on two proposals to provide protection to the Dreamers, while enhancing border security. Separately, lawmakers are calling for action to address the new “zero tolerance” policy for those entering the U.S. illegally across the border, resulting in the separation of children and families.

Daniel Garza, president of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“We appreciate the hard work and courage from many advocates in Congress who continue to work on a legislative solution to provide the Dreamers with the certainty they need to plan their lives and contribute fully to our communities. It’s clear there’s strong support in Congress and among the American people to provide permanency to the Dreamers.

“It’s encouraging that the House will have a debate this week on immigration bills that include protections for the Dreamers. Unfortunately, in their current form, both bills expected to receive a vote fall short of the solution we need. Neither affords the Dreamers the certainty they need to make a full contribution to American communities. Both include arbitrary cuts to legal immigration.

“Policy challenges such as the status of the Dreamers and the arrival of families at our borders defy a simple solution. Given the urgency of the matter, we believe Congress and the administration should focus on three main actions. First, the president should take immediate action to end the separation of families at the border by rescinding the “zero tolerance” policy. Next, we need Congress to pass a permanent solution for the Dreamers and enhanced border security. Lastly, Congress should address the future flow of immigration – evaluating family and employment visa policies, and ensuring that America is properly prioritizing the admission of those who wish to contribute positively into our society in the future.”
