Obamacare: We Passed It and Now We're Paying For It

Despite Broken Promises, Costs are Growing

(Washington, D.C.) – The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, has become known for broken campaign trail promises and surprises for consumers who are still "finding out what's in it." As Medicare cuts, new taxes, and costly mandates take effect, people are concerned about the costs associated with the law, and the increasing unaffordability of healthcare. More and more, Americans are realizing how much they will be paying for it.

It was recently reported that health care spending is on the rise again, with last year's increase the highest in a decade. This finding raises questions about whether the health care law has played a role in increasing costs. A survey conducted by Morgan Stanley shows significant increases in small group and individual rates – averaging 11-12 percent, but with much higher rates in some states – with Delaware up by 100 percent. Meanwhile, the most recent Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates place the cost of the bill at nearly $2 trillion.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:

"Obamacare continues to prove itself a bitter pill that is leaving many Americans in a worse situation than they were before this flawed legislation was instituted. Despite the promises and claims of its supporters, this law is becoming the un-Affordable Care Act.

Americans were promised healthcare reform that would expand coverage to millions of uninsured Americans, but that has not happened. We were promised quality care that would come at little cost to taxpayers, and yet by all indications that will not happen. Instead, premiums are rising, out-of-pocket expenses are up, and the overall healthcare experience is declining. It's time to reform the reform, and to take advantage of competition in the market to improve the consumer experience and get costs back under control. It's time to rein in the counterproductive mandates that are hurting health care in America."
