North Carolina Budget Promotes Educational Opportunity

(Washington, D.C.) – This week the North Carolina House and Senate came together to pass a budget that has strong support in both bodies of the legislature. This fiscal plan increases state spending by 3 percent – saving taxpayers $500 million in comparison to the governor’s request. It also reduces the tax burden on North Carolina families and businesses, while promoting educational opportunity through funding of Personal Education Savings Accounts (PESAs), Opportunity Scholarships, and Teacher Performance Pay. The PESA initiative would allow eligible children with disabilities to obtain scholarships to help with educational expenses, including tuition at private schools. The budget increases funding for Opportunity Scholarships and Teacher Performance Pay.

Daniel Garza, President of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“North Carolina parents and students will be better off if state leaders support and implement reforms that will promote educational opportunity. The budget passed by the legislature includes important provisions to give our kids access to better schools, and to empower families with tools to allow them to match their kids to schools where they will succeed. Latinos in particular, support school choice, and they stand to benefit if PESAs and other educational choice measures are signed into law. Reforms like this are a critical part of preparing the next generation to build their own American Dream.”
