New Problems Emerge in Health Care Law
Glitches, Allegations of Unfair Treatment for Abuse Victims

(Washington, D.C.) – With one week left to purchase policies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also called Obamacare, new problems with the law are continuing to emerge. For example, despite having been aware of it for several years, the White House has not addressed a problem with the law that leaves many victims of spousal abuse paying far more for insurance than others. The problem reportedly affects any married couple filing taxes separately.

Additionally, despite assurances from the president that website problems have been addressed, another new "glitch" has come to light. Thousands of insurance shoppers have been getting incorrect cost estimates for policies purchased under the law. There is no way of knowing how many may have been dissuaded from purchasing insurance because of this problem. While the Administration has argued that problems with the website have been fixed, the President recently placed a call to the team which is continuing to address ongoing problems with the site.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

"Just a week remains for Americans to sign up for health care under the new law. But six months after its disastrous launch, people are still discovering new problems with the federal health care site. And years after becoming aware of the unfair treatment of spousal abuse victims, the Administration still hasn't instituted a fix. If this law is genuinely intended to help people by providing needed care at fair and affordable prices, why are Americans still being forced to cope with problems that should have been corrected long ago?

It's clear that millions of hard-working Americans will soon face unfair fines for not purchasing insurance as required under this law. This is simply unfair. It's time for a new approach – one that responds to the needs of patients and consumers, and not based on rigid and costly federal mandates. The Washington-centered approach is not working. Let's start listening to the American people."
