El objetivo de proporcionar acceso a servicios de salud de calidad es valioso e importante, pero la solución actual mediante la Ley de Cuidado de Salud Asequible (ACA, por sus siglas en inglés) no es aceptable porque incrementa el poder del gobierno sobre la relación médicopaciente. Este mandato federal es un impuesto camuflado que obliga a los ciudadanos a comprar planes de seguro, mientras que amenazas con disposiciones y penalidades a individuos y pequeñas empresas que ya han sido afectados en esta economía. Los requisitos específicos de la legislación ACA inevitablemente limitarán la creación de empleo y añadirán otra capa de burocracia a un sistema ya ahogado en regulaciones. Según la Federación Nacional de Negocios Independientes, este impuesto podría reducir el empleo en el sector privado por varios cientos de miles de puestos de trabajo durante la próxima década, más de la mitad de los cuales ocurrirían en pequeñas empresas y el impacto en el producto interno bruto podría ser tan alto como $185 mil millones.

Sus consecuencias limitarán la cantidad de opciones disponibles en el mercado y continuará llevando a la nación por un camino fiscal insostenibilidad. Además, este plan hace poco por combatir el malgasto, el fraude y el abuso que actualmente sofoca al sistema. Se trata simplemente de un plan inaccesible que no está a la altura de la reforma que realmente necesitamos. Una verdadera reforma debe ser eficiente, eficaz y centrada en el paciente. Un sistema de salud basado en el mercado podría ofrecer a las personas la oportunidad de comparar servicios de diferentes proveedores y obligarlos a reducir costos sin sacrificar la calidad del servicio.
