ICYMI: Daniel Garza Stands Up for School Choice in New York

(Washington D.C.) – The LIBRE Initiative’s Executive Director, Daniel Garza, spoke out in defense of school choice in the state of New York, in a Spanish language opinion piece published in El Diario. Presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, re-launched her campaign from the state but has yet to address the issue.

School choice is a way of approaching education that empowers parents and students. It is critically important to millions of children””especially inner-city minorities””who are stuck in chronically underperforming school systems. They desperately need a way out of this broken system, and they deserve the education that is vital to prospering in the 21st century economy.

The Hispanic community has a lot at stake in this debate. Some40 percent of New York City public school students are Hispanic, and13 percent are English language learners. These two populations often overlap, and they benefit most from school choice.

Mrs. Clinton herself has previously expressed opposition to school choice. During her first run for New York’s Senate seat, she claimed vouchers “siphon dollars” away from public schools.

Hillary Clinton frequently says that she wants to be a champion for everyday Americans. In the context of education, that means standing with children who are stuck in failing schools, and providing them a way out. Will Mrs. Clinton stand with them, or with the status quo?
