Healthcare.Gov Redesign May Not be Completed on Schedule

(Washington, D.C.) – Press reports indicate that the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is overseeing a redesign of the Healthcare.gov website. The new website is intended to improve upon the deeply-troubled system used in the first year of enrollment, and will feature a "built-from-scratch" login system. But with a tight timetable to complete work, and an ongoing transition to new contractors to handle the system, analysts are concerned the new site may not be ready in time to ensure smooth consumer enrollment. Amazon.com's Web Services unit will reportedly host functions including comparison tools, the coverage application, and others. The changes will also include a new account creation tool.

Enrollment under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, begins November 15. An administration official says the changes are intended to create a better market and maximize enrollment.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:

"The first year of the new health care law was defined by higher premiums, higher deductibles, narrower networks, long waits for processing and of course, a broken website. And this was despite years of preparation by the White House for the launch. In fact, the current version of the site is not yet fully-functioning.  Now the administration is preparing a new site – one that they hope will work far better. But analysts involved in the work are already saying that like the first one, it may not be ready in time.

The American people deserve better. Rather than a closed and insular process that depends on unilateral fixes, government control, and more taxpayer money, the administration should look for options that expand options for consumers – including choices that go beyond the federal website."
