Health Care Law Takes Effect

Health Care Law Takes Effect
Confusion, Lost Coverage, Higher Costs and Taxes

(Washington, D.C.) – On January 1, health insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, took effect. While the Administration continues to claim that approximately 2 million people have enrolled under the law, it is reported that only about half of these subscribers have paid their first premium so far. People are not actually enrolled until they have paid. Furthermore, problems in the application process may lead many to believe they are covered, when in fact they're  not. Those who have applied may choose to check with insurers to confirm their coverage and whether or not their doctors are participating. With all these problems, experts believe more people may have actually lost their insurance coverage due to the law, than gained it.

According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), taxpayers will be on the hook for more than $700 billion in added costs for the expansion of Medicaid that likely comprises the majority of actual enrollments so far. The insurance policies purchased under the law will require more than $1 trillion in taxes or borrowing, estimates the CBO.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:

"The new health care law is now taking full effect, and the signs so far are very troubling. Families are dealing with higher premiums and higher deductibles. Millions have lost insurance and been scrambling to replace it. And unfortunately, the Administration is continuing to paint a rosy picture of the results rather than dealing honestly with the problems.

Elected officials who continue to support this deeply-flawed law must be held accountable for not recognizing the ramifications of this system for millions of Americans who face uncertainty about their health care because of it."
