Growing Support in Congress for Legislation to Protect Dreamers

(Washington, D.C.) – As Members of Congress work on completing legislative business for the year, there is growing bipartisan support for legislation to provide permanent legal protections to the Dreamers. Without legal protection, those individuals brought to the United States as children would be at risk of deportation – undermining their ability to work, study, and serve.

Daniel Garza, President of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“Today there are hundreds of thousands of young people who have grown up in the United States and who know no other home, and whose contributions to our nation are undercut by a growing uncertainty because they fear for their future. Dreamers are young people who were brought here through no fault of their own, and who are currently working, studying, and serving in our armed services. As they pursue their own American Dream, they make our communities and our nation stronger. It’s encouraging that so many lawmakers from both sides of the aisle recognize their contribution, and see the importance of extending them legal protection. We urge Senators and Members of Congress to continue working toward this important goal, and to pass bipartisan legislation as expeditiously as possible, that grants Dreamers the permanent relief needed to best plan their lives and reach their full economic potential.”
