Governor Martinez Executive Order Breaks Barriers for Latinos in New Mexico

(Albuquerque, NM)—New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez has issued an executive order to bring about comprehensive occupational licensing reform across the state. This executive order builds on one that Martinez signed in July, which encouraged licensing boards to consider alternatives to licensing requirements where possible. The order includes provisions that ease licensing rules, waive fees for qualifying applicants, and establish a “consumer choice” process as an alternative to occupational licensing. This alternative allows individuals to practice most occupations without an occupational license so long as the individual or individual’s employer discloses this information to the customer.

Daniel Garza, President of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“This executive order is a major win for the Latino community in New Mexico. By signing this executive order, Governor Martinez is removing unnecessary institutional barriers that prevent New Mexican Latinos from achieving their full potential and better providing for themselves and their families. It will enable people of various economic and experienced backgrounds to deliver services that make their communities better. Comprehensive occupational licensing reform will enable Latinos to grow their careers, contribute to their communities, and pursue their individual American dreams.”
