Dreamer Solution Falls on Congress, not Supreme Court

(Arlington, VA) – Today the Supreme Court announced it will consider challenges to the president’s action to terminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program during its next session.

Kevin Hernandez, Policy Director of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“The Supreme Court has indicated that it will address the narrow question of whether the Administration followed appropriate procedure when it terminated the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. But the Court’s decision will not lay out a permanent path for addressing the status of the Dreamers going forward. Regardless of the Court’s decision on the fate of DACA, the broader question will still be in the hands of Congress and the president. And waiting for a Court decision leading into 2020 will only make that more difficult.

 

“Large majorities of Americans support finding a permanent solution for Dreamers and want Congress to act now. Until Congress and the president do so, Dreamers remain unable to plan their futures – while America misses out on the full contribution from this group of talented individuals. The current uncertainty around whether they may legally remain in the United States, prevents them from fully contributing to their families and communities. This hurts all of us.

 

“Congress and the president just supported a $4.6 billion emergency aid plan to address the humanitarian crisis at the border – demonstrating that they are able to do the hard work of collaborating on critical immigration questions. That process isn’t easy, but it’s important. It’s the only way we can begin to respond to serious immigration challenges. They should continue this important work by acting to now provide certainty to the Dreamers.”
