Daniel Garza Comments on Supreme Court DAPA Action

(Washington, DC) – Today the Supreme Court announced that it will take up a legal challenge to President Obama’s Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA) program.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“We have long said that President Obama has relied far too heavily on executive orders, instead of doing the hard work of convincing Members of Congress of both parties to enact more durable reforms. Now valuable time has been lost, as the debate in Congress has been stalled since this order was issued in 2014, with people waiting for a court ruling instead of focusing on legislative efforts. And regardless of how the Supreme Court ultimately rules, these legal changes are still essential, because these limited and temporary orders cannot fix all the problems with our immigration system.

The DAPA order was implemented unilaterally, and without public input. It made changes that the president himself had repeatedly said were beyond his authority. It would be no surprise if it is struck down. Unfortunately, those who would be most hurt are the otherwise law-abiding immigrants who came seeking opportunity, and members of their family who have citizenship or legal status. Regardless of the outcome, we will continue to advocate for permanent, sensible and market-based reform that will keep families together, strengthen our economy, and keep Americans safe.”
