Critical Health Law Deadline Extended One Day
Consumer Confusion & Disappointment in Law Remains
(Washington, D.C.) – Today was to be the deadline for most Americans to choose a health insurance plan under the Affordable Care Act in order to have it take effect on January 1 – but the White House has reportedly added one more day for people to enroll. As people choose plans, experts say there is currently little confidence that more people will have private health insurance on January 1st than before the law took effect. Meanwhile, consumers in states like Minnesota, Maryland, Oregon and others are continuing to encounter serious problems as they try to sign up. And insurers who have been asked by the Administration to change enrollment schedules and terms of coverage are offering varied responses. As a result of the law's complexity and the changes that are being made, it will be very difficult for many consumers to know exactly what they are signing up for.
Not surprisingly, a new poll by CNN shows that the law is more unpopular than it has ever been. A full 63 percent believe the law will increase the amount they spend on health care, against just 7 percent who think it will lower their costs. Just 16 percent believe their families will be better off as a result of changes.

"It's unfortunate that for millions of Americans, the holidays will be a time to worry about the status of their health insurance and about the unaffordable cost of medical care going forward. Millions face a choice between higher insurance premiums or a penalty tax for not complying with the law. This is simply unfair – and the polls show Americans are not happy.
The Administration and advocates of this law are losing support on a grand scale because of the many problems with a fatally-flawed system. It is time for accountability from those who support this law and for a law that simply does not work as promised."
