Court Decision Shows Need For Congressional Action on DACA

(Arlington, VA) – Today Judge Bates of United States District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that the administration should restart in full the DACA program. The order is delayed until August 23, 2018.

According to a recent poll, more than 90 percent of Americans regard it as important for Congress to agree on legislation dealing with the status of the Dreamers. Despite the broad support for action, Congress has failed to come together to enact such legislation. Earlier this year, The LIBRE Initiative announced a seven-figure campaign, in partnership with Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, in support of permanent legal status for the Dreamers.

Daniel Garza, President of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“Today’s ruling offers hope for the Dreamer community. But knowing that further court action is still expected means that there is no real certainty for these individuals or their communities. Despite today’s ruling, Dreamers are still living between court decisions – unable to plan for the future, unable to fully contribute to their communities, and unable to truly achieve the American Dream.

Congress and the White House must work together to solve this problem by passing legislation that has broad support – providing Dreamers permanency while enhancing border security. There is overwhelming support in Congress, and among the American people, for this goal. No Shut-Down is needed and there is no reason to delay. We need leadership to drive Congress immediately to pass legislation on the status of the Dreamers.”
